Beyond Black and White

You would think that in 2010, our world would have learned to be more loving and tolerant of diversity; of people loving those outside their race, but I find that is not always true. Being in love and being loved, is a wonderful experience.

I have had the wonderful experience of marrying numerous couples of various beliefs, and ethnic backgrounds. It is always interesting to hear how they present their facts; are they thinking that I would turn them away? No, I welcome you.

In reading the various blogs that lead me to other blogs across the internet, I stumbled upon a very interesting posting. I share with you only a portion. Please take a moment to visit her blog to read the rest.

My Story: Jumping the Broom with a White Boy

–Christelyn D. Karazin

Excerpt from Swirling: How to Date, Mate and Relate Mixing Race, Culture and Creed, to be released February 2011.

Marriage is for white people.

It’s hard to say what I felt exactly when I read that Washington Post editorial a few years ago—offended, outed, but mostly just sad. But finally, someone in the media had exposed the furtive secret, the dirty laundry. Despite the fact that my own parents had been married for 45 years, I learned early that marriage for whites and blacks was distinctly different—if it happened with blacks at all. In my pubescent, wide-eyed youth, I remember, hands clasped against one cheek, sighing my dreams of love, marriage, mutual understanding and cooperation to some friend or relative only for them to scoff

Are You A Helicopter Parent?

Helicopter Parenting describes parents who hover over their children and become too involved in their lives, including interfering in college or career decisions later in life. Are you headed in this direction with your child? Take our quiz to find out if you're hovering too much already.

Four In 10 Say Marriage Is Becoming Obsolete

A study by the Pew Research Center, in association with Time magazine, highlights rapidly changing notions of the American family. And the Census Bureau, too, is planning to incorporate broader definitions of family when measuring poverty, a shift caused partly by recent jumps in unmarried couples living together.

About 29 percent of children under 18 now live with a parent or parents who are unwed or no longer married, a fivefold increase from 1960, according to the Pew report being released Thursday. Broken down further, about 15 percent have parents who are divorced or separated and 14 percent who were never married. Within those two groups, a sizable chunk — 6 percent — have parents who are live-in couples who opted to raise kids together without getting married.

Indeed, about 39 percent of Americans said marriage was becoming obsolete. And that sentiment follows U.S. census data released in September that showed marriages hit an all-time low of 52 percent for adults 18 and over.

When asked what constitutes a family, the vast majority of Americans agree that a married couple, with or without children, fits that description. But four of five surveyed pointed also to an unmarried, opposite-sex couple with children or a single parent. Three of 5 people said a same-sex couple with children was a family.

3 Signs of a Bridezilla

Planning your wedding need not turn you into the wicked witch of the west. Learning to designate tasks to others will help you in keeping the stress down and the arguments to a minimal. If you are being told by members of your bridal party that you are becoming "too much" to deal with, maybe you should listen.

It is quite easy to get completely wrapped up in the planning of a wedding, so much so, Bridezilla inevitably emerges as your alter ego. Here are 3 signs that you are turning into the Bridezilla:

1. Mico-Management: Despite having a wedding planner, she is determined to tell every vendor how to do their job down to the last detail. She has paid hundreds or even thousands of dollars to have everything just right, but does not trust that the professionals she's hired will not do the job properly.

2. Ungratefulness: If she is showing signs of being impatient, becoming over bearing and bossy, Bridezilla may be just around the corner. She must remember that her girlfriends and family members don't have to do the tasks they are doing. They are assisting on your special day because they love and care for you.

3. Being Ignored: Are your friends dropping like flies? Are they ignoring your calls and won't return your texts or emails? You have become to much to deal with and they need a break. This is done in an effort to give you a nonverbal warning that you have become a Bridezilla; they just don't want to tell you.

Remember, the professionals that you have hired, are just that - Professionals. They are good in their field and will make your day as you have specified. Your friends and family members are there to help you, not take on your abuse. Be mindful of your attitude and actions at all times. If you are feeling overwhelmed, tell someone. Keep your Bridezilla at bay.

Can You Bless My Dog?

Saturday, October 2nd, I was a part of a wonderful experience. The annual Interfaith Blessing of the Animals in Long Beach in association with Justin Rudd. I just love the community projects and events that Justin hosts (My kids participate in the Saturday beach clean up).

Saturday, I knew that I would enjoy being around all of the animals, but this was more exciting than I had imagined. I've always had a dog or cat in my life growing up, so I was really looking forward to it. Little did I realize that I would leave, just as blessed as the animals had been that day.

I got doggie kisses from a beautiful poodle with red ribbons and a good hand lick from Lola the bull dog. There were so many animals, it's now hard to remember all the names. But I do remember how great I felt during the event. The love the animals had for their owners and the love the owners had for their 2 or 4 legged family members was just great.

I look forward to being a part of this great blessing event, every year that I can.

The Little Tree Church in Tustin, CA

I had the opportunity to perform a wonderful infant baptism in Tustin this past week. Since I am a mobile officiant, I am able to visit various venues within Southern California. I was given the description “ a little church in the middle of it all”. It was just that. I loved the location so much, I thought that I would share it with you.

The Story of the Little Tree Church:
After we completed the construction of Jamestown Village in 1962, I was in a quandary as to what to do with the oak tree that used to stand at the corner of the barn before the buildings were demolished. Jamestown Village, incidentally, is the site of the old Crawford farm house.

I felt that I should do something special around this oak tree. Flowers? Everybody plants flowers. A tree house? No, kids would get hurt. Then my thoughts drifted back to my childhood in Columbia, Tennessee.

There back about 1912, I used to drive my grandmother, in a horse and buggy, six miles into the country once about every three months to the Hopewell Church that she attended before the Civil War. That gave me the idea, and the solution for the oak tree.

So the little tree church is actually Grandma’s church in miniature. But with the oak tree growing through the middle of it.

It seats eight people, has an organ. The pulpit is made of a large rock elevated on brick up to pulpit height.
The church is often used for weddings. The atmosphere here is more romantic than the large churches offer and the couple doesn’t have that big bill hanging over their heads to spoil the honeymoon.
--- C.T. Gilbreath – about 1970

The tree has since been removed, however, the charm of this little church has not changed. This was the perfect place to hold a baptism.

Need a place to hold your special event or wedding – this is it!

Vernon Baker, extraordinary hero dies

Vernon Baker, left, here with President Bill Clinton, earned a Medal of Honor for his actions during World War II.

STORY HIGHLIGHTS
  • Baker, who received the Medal of Honor more than 50 years after his heroic acts, dies at 90
  • He took out several machine gun nests firing on his unit in Italy
  • The U.S. government admitted racism was a factor in Medal of Honor decisions
  • "I just feel I was a soldier and I did my job," Baker said after the 1997 ceremony

Washington (CNN) -- Vernon Baker earned a Medal of Honor for his actions during World War II. But because of what the U.S. government acknowledges was racism against African-Americans who performed heroically in the war, it took more than 50 years for him to get what he had earned.

Baker, one of only seven African-Americans to receive the nation's highest military honor from World War II, died Tuesday at his home in Idaho, according to his hometown police and coroner's offices.

He passed away after a long battle with cancer. His wife and members of his family were by his side. He was 90 years old.

Baker was orphaned at the age of 4, and was raised first by his grandparents and later at Father Flanagan's Boys Town in Nebraska.

He joined the Army six months before the Pearl Harbor attack and was part of the 92nd Infantry Division, the first unit of "colored" soldiers to see combat in World War II.

He eventually rose to the rank of lieutenant and was leading a platoon against entrenched German machine gun nests near Viareggio, Italy, on April 5, 1945.

His official Medal of Honor citation describes what he did:

"When his company was stopped by the concentration of fire from several machine gun emplacements, he crawled to one position and destroyed it, killing three Germans. Continuing forward, he attacked and enemy observation post and killed two occupants. With the aid of one of his men, Lieutenant Baker attacked two more machine gun nests, killing or wounding the four enemy soldiers occupying these positions. He then covered the evacuation of the wounded personnel of his company by occupying an exposed position and drawing the enemy's fire."

After spending the better part of a day putting his life at risk to lead his unit, Baker was back in action the next evening:

"On the following night Lieutenant Baker voluntarily led a battalion advance through enemy mine fields and heavy fire toward the division objective."

Baker was originally awarded the Army's Distinguished Service Cross for his action. But in the early 1990s, a study was done to find why none of the more than 400 World War II Medal of Honor recipients was black. The study found "a racial disparity in the way Medal of Honor recipients were selected."

Seven African American heroes from World War II were chosen to receive the Medal of Honor from President Bill Clinton. Four of them had died in the war, and two others had died in the time since the war. Only Baker was at the White House to have the iconic star and pale blue ribbon draped around his neck.

During an interview with CNN before the White House ceremony on January 13, 1997, Baker spoke about the racism that delayed recognition of him and his fellow Medal of Honor recipients: "As I look back on it, it really makes me feel sad that we did our job, we fought, but we weren't appreciated"

After the White House ceremony, Baker told CNN, "I still don't feel like a hero. I just feel I was a soldier and I did my job, and I think I was rewarded for it."

Baker is survived by his wife, Heidy, and five children. He is expected to be buried at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors.

Michelle Obama to visit Gulf Coast

By Alex Wong, Getty Images
July 8, 2010 -- WASHINGTON -- First lady Michelle Obama on Monday will make her first trip to the Gulf Coast since the BP oil spill by visiting Panama City Beach, Fla., aides said today.

She will deliver a speech to area residents after being briefed by officials and local leaders, aides said. The briefing largely will be closed to the press.

"We are excited to have the first lady come," said Gayle Oberst, mayor of the Florida Panhandle community of 13, 453. "Tourism is the lifeblood of our city and county and we are seeing drastic changes in the way people feel about coming to the world's most beautiful beaches if there is a possibility of oil being on the sands." Long Beach Museum of Art

I married a wonderful couple on July 4th - Tiffany & Jerry - at the Long Beach Museum of Art on Ocean Blvd., in Long Beach. The view was gorgeous. Deciding to use a rich cocoa-brown for the table drape, everyone had a view of the Pacific Ocean.

Getting married at a museum may not be your first choice, but with a view like this, at least place it on your list. I love being a mobile officiant for this very reason - finding new places to pass on to my bridal couples.

Betty Reckas Cultural Center

Sunday, I married a wonderful couple (Kris & Roosevelt) at the Betty Reckas Cultural Center in Long Beach. Being a mobile officiant, I have the pleasure of traveling to great locations. The Betty Reckas Cultural Center is just that - a great location, tucked away in plan view.

The blue domed roof is very obvious from Pacific Coast Highway, yet you zip right past it. I was glad that Khristina did not. Her mother being Greek Orthodox, this was the perfect location for them. Not using the sanctuary instead opting for the "garden area" for a beautiful summertime wedding.

If you are looking for a great location, try the Betty Reckas Cultural Center in Long Beach.

Gulf Oil Spill Day of Prayer, Sunday, June 27, 2010

Blessings All Around and Angela Chester Ministries join with Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal for a day of prayer. Gov. Bobby Jindal has called for prayer in Louisiana, for perseverance in coping with the environmental crisis caused by the oil spill in the Gulf. The day of prayer is Sunday, June 27, 2010.

State senators in Louisiana have designated Sunday as a day of prayer aimed at seeking an end to the Gulf of Mexico oil spill disaster. On Wednesday, Louisiana state Sen. Robert Adley won unanimous approval of the resolution, which invites people of all faiths from within the state and around the U.S. to focus on divine intervention to find a solution to the crisis.

“You don’t have to live in Louisiana to understand the pain and anxiety that the families are feeling.
Seeing the pictures of the birds covered in oil is heart wrenching. The oil spill affects all of us - East coast, West coast, Gulf coast.”, explained Angela Chester Ministries’ Spokesperson Rev. Angela Butts-Chester.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry also has declared Sunday a day of prayer in his state.

Wedding in La Mirada

Saturday, I preformed a wedding at the La Mirada Golf Course. I've performed several weddings here, so I thought I would mention it to those of you looking for a nice place to hold your wedding and reception.

The view is nice and relaxing; very cool atmosphere - not to hot or shaded. The gazebo made for a nice ceremony. I was able to get the wedding couple, the BM & MoH in the space and not feel crowded for the ring vows & a sand ceremony. Natalie, was the assistant for that wedding - she was very helpful.

"With a terrace overlooking the golf course and a ballroom with beautiful golf course views, La Mirada is the ideal setting for your next event." Take a moment to find out more here.
